In Fiji, hotels are and more losing on skilled and efficient workers from the overseas.
The Fiji Hotels and Tourism Association explained that this is one of the major problems of the industry right at this moment.
Fantasha Lockington, Chief Executive, said that even though campaigns like the Pacific Labor Scheme in Fiji produced good remittances, it’s producing an empty space in the industry.
To fill that space, lot of training was done as the sector comprises service, and if they spend time, money and energy behind training then that decreases their ability to focus on some of the main things that they should ideally be doing.
Tan Daniel Roy, Tanoa International Hotel General Manager, says that they are fortifying the relationship of their employers and employee.
Tan said that they been working closely with Fiji universities with the likes of USP, the FNU and other organizations of the hospitality sector to work with them with the hotels and make use of those skills that are actually in need.
Roy also says that trying to handle tourists at this peak season is tricky considering the dearth of skilled workers in hotel that they are facing at this moment.
