This year, tourism is satisfying the Dominican Republic with good news! The success of the country’s involvement in FITUR, the important role played in the main world cruise congress held in Miami in April, and the recent appreciation conferred by the UNWTO and received by Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader and Minister David Collado in Santo Domingo are landmarks boosting the country as a preferred destination for a vacation.

The Ministry of Tourism data indicate that in the first four months of this year, 2.2 million tourists visited the country by air and almost 320,000 on cruise ships. In the times of Omicron and the restrictions coming with it, along with the negative effect of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both countries being for tourism in the Dominican Republic, the figure is indeed very promising. If this pace continues, and without any new difficulties upsetting it, 2022 could see the barrier of 5 million tourists to be exceeded again.

Investment is another aspect connected to the tourism sector. Since the reopening of the economy started in the summer of 2020, the Dominican Republic government said that the recovery needs to be accompanied by growth in housing accessibility. Last year, there were new investments in tourism by more than US$550 million. A year before, at the heart of the pandemic, investments were even almost double. The country’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado said that their plan is to achieve US$8 billion more in investments in toursim over the next three years.
