Tourism ministry urges sustainable development in Kerala flood wake

Kerala tourismThe Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Tourism has said that the setback to Kerala Tourism in the wake of the floods should act as a catalyst to promote sustainable development of tourism.

 
The loss suffered by the tourism industry was among a range of issues that came up for discussions at the committee’s meeting at the beach resort of Kovalam on Monday.

 
Union Minister of State for Tourism K.J. Alphons, addressing the committee, said such an adversity “should be taken as an example for development of tourism in a sustainable manner in the country.”

 
The meeting was attended by members of the committee along with the Union Tourism Secretary and the Parliamentary Affairs Secretary. Kerala was represented by its Tourism Secretary Rani George and senior officials of the Tourism Department. The committee reiterated its support to the Kerala Tourism industry saying that all steps should be taken to bring it back on the rails after the recent floods.

 
Various stakeholders in the industry, who were invited for the meeting, made a presentation before the committee on the impact of floods on the tourism sector. They also appealed for substantial support from the Union government.
