Tourism NT drives wet season tourism in Greater Darwin

For six months every year, with the level of humidity increasing in and around Darwin, request for tours with local tour guide Rob Woods’s small eco-tourism company increases considerably.

Statistics from the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade of theNorthern Territory, 396,000 people visited the Greater Darwin areain the course of the wet season in 2019, as compared to 512,000 in the dry, marking a drop of around 23 per cent.

With a reduction in numbers, a larger number of tourism businesses shut downduring the wet season. Some hotels decrease capacity and restaurants have the option of closing down for a month or more. However, the scenario is expected to change soon.

Tourism NT is thinking aboutbalancing up the recognized seasonality of the Top End tourism by increasing visitor numbers during the wet season. It is a part of a plan for the Greater Darwin region, which considers boosting operator revenue, backing a steadier workforce and encouraging more investment in the industry.
