Tourism operators across Geelong and the Surf Coast are preparing for the return of Melbourne tourists with Victoria marching aheadwith a fully-vaccinated rate of 80 per cent.
The ban on Melbournians visiting the regions will be lifted at 6pm on Friday, along with other restrictions. Masks will no longer be compulsory outdoors, and hospitality and entertainment venues will operate at increased capacity and retail outlets will reopen. The eased restrictions will only apply to people vaccinated with both doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
Local tourism was hit hard by more than a year of on-again off-again lock-downs in Melbourne and across the state. Operators reported increased bookings as soon as Premier Daniel Andrews revealed plans formajor easing of restrictions. Most restrictions – with one or two exceptions – are expected to be lifted from the end of November when the state’s full vaccination rate reaches 90 per cent.
A new campaign has been launched for encouraging hesitant Australians to protect themselves and their loved ones by getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
