Businesses, mainly the ones which are associated with tourism and hospitality sectors, say July 1st, the date the government is hoping to declare Covid-19 endemic – is too long to wait for restrictions to get removed. Thailand’s tourism sector is quite worried as operators observe what’s happening in the nearby countries.

Chamnan Srisawat from the Tourism Council of Thailand says July 1st is almost 4 months from now and several businesses will fight back to keep going until then, as per a report published by Bangkok Post. He’s calling for the Test & Go entry scheme to be ditched well before then, to give the country an opportunity to contend on the world tourism stage.

“Thailand used to be a first mover in terms of a re-opening plan, but the country is going to face losses as it is slated to be one of the last ones to fully re-open now.”

Chamnan is calling for the government to get rid of all restrictions related to travel by Songkran, emphasizing that the sector is worried about the financial harm of restrictions and the increase in suicide cases. He also mentions that the rate of imported infections is insignificant and doesn’t give a solid reason for maintaining firm conditions while entering in places.

The Thai Hotels Association agrees to the same. THA President Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi explains that if restrictions are not dropped before July 1st, the tourism sector of Thailand will lose out to other countries. She also wants Test & Go gets removed as well in order to kick-start economic recovery. In the meantime, Sanan Angubolkul from the Thai Chamber of Commerce thinks Covid-19 should be declared endemic.
