Alberta boycottAnxiety that Albertans will call off vacations to the wine regions of British Columbia first emerged when the owner of Fort McMurray, Alberta, restaurant Asti Trattoria Italiana removed B.C. wines from their menu. It was kind of a sign of support for the oil workers of the town. On February 6th, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley increased the tension as she declared that the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission would not permit restaurants and retailers of the province to stock B.C. wine. It was a decision that has the chance to cost the province about $70 million per year.

Though the general consensus is that Albertans keep on visiting B.C. and if by any chance they had to stop coming to B.C. for skiing, for instance – many fellow Albertans would end up getting hurt.

Albertan and Calgary Flames co-owner Murray Edwards is also the owner of Resorts of the Canadian Rockies Inc. It’s being owned by B.C.’s Fernie Alpine, Kimberley Alpine and Kicking Horse Mountain resorts.

“The majority of the accommodation in those resorts are also owned by Albertans,” said Big White Ski Resort senior vice-president Michael Ballingall.

He said that majority of the housing close to those resorts has been on rental pools in order to make the visitors stay in those homes while holidaying, and that majority of the people who have homes in rental pools belongs to Alberta.

Ballingall explained that he had hesitation that Albertans will boycott B.C. ski resorts. This will hurt fellow Albertans, augmenting that he has witnessed no sign as of now that shows Albertans are going to boycott Big White.

“Right now Alberta visitors are booking ahead of the pace that they were booking year-to-date at this time last year,” he said. “A skier is a skier is a skier. They’re going to go where the powder is, and all the B.C. resorts are having fabulous snow years.”
