Tourism prohibited in Tamhini Sanctuary area due to heavy rain

Tourism has been prohibited in Tamhini Sanctuary, Ghat, Andharban area. This place is well-known for tourism in Mulshi taluka, under the Wildlife Protection Act. It will remain closed for tourists till further orders are issued. The verdict was taken in the context of the likelihood of heavy rain and the ongoing intense precipitation. Consequently, action will be taken against anyone who violates the rules.


The area of Tamhini sanctuary is located in the area where the meteorological division has envisaged heavy downpour.

This area witnesses heavy rain every year. For the last 12 days, it has been raining here. Streams are flooded. Massive losses of agriculture and paddy crops have been witnessed. Roads have become risky.


Tamhini Ghat, Andharban area a lot of mountains and deep valleys. Landslides are common here during monsoons.

Waterfalls in the area have heavy flow of water due to greater amount of water flowing into the streams.


Visibility becomes quite less during monsoon because of heavy precipitation and fog. Roads are unsafe in dense fog, which have resulted in tourists losing their paths by slip-up.


Bearing all these possibilities in mind, Tushar Chavan, the conservator of Wildlife and Forests of Pune Forest Department, has brought in a prohibition on tourism in the Tamhini sanctuary until further orders are given to keep away from any mishap or death cases.
