Tourism ushered in $4 billion to Montreal in 2017

Tourism Montreal asserted that the city witnessed a bumper year when it comes to welcoming visitors in 2017.

Last year, the city welcomed 11.1 million travellers marking a rise of nearly 5.1% as compared with the year 2016. And those tourists had spent $4 billion here last year, a rise of nearly 9.7%.

The Conference Board of Canada states that tourists from France, the main source of tourism of the city had risen by almost nine percent, the number of tourists coming here from China skyrocketed by 33%.

The number of Americans flying to Montreal in 2017 had risen by 11.9%.

On the other hand visits from the United States through different means of transportation had risen by 4.8%. Montreal-Trudeau airport had dealt with nearly 18.2 million passengers last year, about 9.5% more than in 2016.

The number of international arrivals had risen by 13.5%.

The Hotel Association of Greater Montreal reported that the 2017 occupancy rates was nearly 76.5% as visitors paid an average of $148.31 a night to stay here. The price increased by about 11.7% as compared with 2016.

Business tourism had risen by 15% as compared with 2016 as 380,000 commercial stays recorded.

Yves Lalumière who is the president of Montreal said that 2017 witnessed tourism becoming one of the most successful contributors to the regional economy and said that the addition of direct flights to the city is among the main factors triggering that success.

The tourism agency had forecast that the number of tourists to Montreal this year would increase to 11.6 million who would be spending $4.3 billion during their stays.
