The theme of the celebration was “Peace and Development through Guiding”. The aim of the event was to create awareness about peace and sustainable development in the tourism industry. They also provided tourist guides across the country which worked as a major platform for networking, talk about various challenges and share best practices.

Different issues influencing the sector were discussed by the Industry experts via various presentations in front of 250 tourist guides and stakeholders. Round-table discussions took place among tourist guides and key concerns were outlined and solutions were talked about. The round-table is one of the main components of the policy review process which is currently carried out. Every year International Tourist Guides’ Day is observed on 21 February. In 1990, the day was launched by the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations. Only 15 countries had participated then. Today, more than 75 countries participate in the celebrations. To quote Hanekom, ‘’ Tourist guides are absolutely critical to the continuing success and growth of tourism in our country. Everyone involved in the long and wide tourism value chain whether as tourist guides or as other links in the chain, has reason to feel very proud of how our sector is performing right now.’’
