Pol Col Surapong Thammapitak, the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya police chief mentioned on Monday that the travellers reported at the police station in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district after the Fine Arts Department had filed two charges against them.
They had allegedly posted a picture on Facebook portraying themselves sitting and standing on the foundation of the ruins in the historic park of Ayutthaya.
Two women Wiyanee Artharn and Salithip Kngow and three men named Yutthiwit Panthongpraset, Pornthep Wongchuen and Boworn Yupithak met the police and Sukanya Baonid, the park director at the police station to hear the charges of climbing historic sites that is likely to cause damage and of showing inappropriate behaviors at historic sites.
Every count carries a fine up to 10,000 baht and/or a one-month jail term.
Col Surapong said that the tourists told police that the pictures were captured during their visit to the old capital on 28th January. All of them were released temporarily since they had no intention to flee and police would forward the case to the Ayutthaya Court on Tuesday, he added.
The five people also apologized to the public for the ignorance as per the police.
The ruins are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site in the former capital.
