As the summer tourist season peaks in popular Italian cities like Venice, Rome, and Florence, travellers are being warned about pickpockets.
Organised groups of pickpockets target crowded areas like museums, public transport stations, and landmarks, blending in and snatching tourists’ belongings unnoticed.
Italian law enforcement authorities have reported a significant increase in pickpocketing cases this summer, leaving many visitors with unpleasant experiences.
To combat this issue, authorities have increased police presence in high-risk areas and advised visitors to keep valuable belongings hidden in concealed pouches. They also warn about pickpockets using distractions to execute their thefts successfully.
Several tourists have shared their unfortunate encounters, prompting vigilance among others. Monica Poli, a Lega Nord councillor in Venice and a member of the “undistracted citizens” group, has taken action by going viral on TikTok for her videos calling out pickpockets and alerting bystanders.
Despite the efforts to address the problem, tourists are urged to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to safeguard their belongings while exploring Italy’s beautiful cities.
