Tourists are making a beeline for the colder climate of Himachal Pradesh to get a respite from the scorching summer heat. This tourist boom has upturned the fortunes of the hill state’s Covid stressed tourism industry. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation saw incomes of Rs. 5.82 crore in just two months.

During April and May, when India was in difficult situation due to the record heat wave, around 40 lakh tourists visited the hill state. In just these two months, 71 HPTDC-run hotels, cafes and restaurants earned Rs. 5.82 crore, marking an about seven fold growth against the peak tourist season of May and June in 2019. That time, the HPTDC witnessed a profit of Rs. 90 lakh.

Between April and June, around 60 lakh tourists visited Himachal, with 18 lakh people coming in April, 19 lakh in May and 21 lakh in the month of June.

Amit Kashyap, the HPTDC director tourism and managing director said that there is a noticeable swelling in the revenue earned this year when compared to the times before the pandemic. A surge in tourist arrivals has also been witnessed.

Himachal is also known as the ‘Land of Gods’, attracting a large number of domestic travelers; however, not many foreigners take in the region in their travel program. However, this year, Himachal had fewer visitors from Maharashtra, Gujarat and West Bengal, since the bulk of tourists from these areas is considering traveling to Jammu and Kashmir.
