Travel & taxes impacting Caribbean tourism

Henry Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Antigua and Barbuda, has an easy-to-understand message for the Caribbean government.

He would like to tell all regional leaders to get committed to regional interconnectivity as they are eager to pay international airlines to fly to their countries, a lot of times they remain half empty.

And therefore, he said that they would need to talk to their leaders and discuss on the importance of regional connectivity, in the middle of the continuing debate in the Caribbean regarding the taxes that regional governments inflict on the aviation and visitor arrivals.

Fernandez made his position known as he took part in a panel on “Multi-Destination Tourism” as part of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation Business Meetings and Caribbean Aviation Day conference organized previous week.

The event was arranged together by the Barbados-based CTO, the Cayman Islands government, and the International Air Transport Association.

Fernandez, who has ministerial responsibilities for financial development as well explained that it is improper for Caribbean governments to pay a US carrier to fly to their countries, most of the time being half empty and say he has nothing to put into a regional carrier. He said that there has to be a commitment that they must do it.

However, he said that in spite of such situation, the region should be eager to think whether lessened taxes would render to higher visitor arrivals, which would denote even more money from visitor spend.
