The UK government has warned British citizens to ‘remain vigilant’ in crowded places including Christmas markets in several places in Europe. These include Germany, France, and eight other European Union countries. The warning has been issued on account of migrant crisis and recent Islamist terrorism.

The travel warning for Germany is ‘There is a general threat from terrorism’.

British citizens have been advised to remain vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities.

There are possibilities for increase in security during the Christmas and New Year period, in Christmas markets and other major events that might attract large crowds.

Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups, and recent French military intervention against Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL), the French government has warned the public to be especially vigilant and has reinforced its security measures.

Other countries where the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warned vigilance around Christmas markets are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden.

FCO travel warning is based on information gathered from embassies and intelligence services. Arrests have been made in the Christmas markets of the two German towns.
