Central Athens and its suburbs felt the tremors of a moderately strong earthquake at 2024 GMT. The fire brigade officials have confirmed that there is not report of any immediate death, injury or damage.
Gerassimos Papadopoulos, researcher with the Athens Geodynamics institute has said that the epicentre was near Marathon, in southeastern Attica at an expected depth between five and 10 km. Mr. Papadopoulos stressed on the possibility of another earthquake and said that the region has been active in the recent days of which the highest tremor was felt yesterday.
Greece is prone to earthquakes. Most cause no serious damage, but a 5.9-magnitude quake near Athens in 1999 killed 143 people. The residents and the tourists have been requested to remain calm.
