Turkey’s statistical office recently reported that the country’s tourism revenue decreased by 65% in 2020, reaching $12.6 billion (10.4 billion euro). TurkStat informed that tourism revenues halved to $3.9 billion, in the fourth quarter alone. According to reports, personal expenditures contributed nearly $10 billion of Turkey’s total tourism revenue last year, while package tour expenditure brought in some $2.6 billion.

The average expenditure per night per tourist was $61 last year with $70 per night for foreign tourists and $44 per night for Turkish citizens resident abroad. The number of visitors to Turkey decreased by 70% to 15.8 million in 2020. Of the total number, 80% or 12.7 million people were foreign visitors, as reported by TurkStat. In 2020, most foreign visitors to Turkey, or 66%, visited for travel, entertainment, sports and cultural activities and majority of Turkish citizens resident abroad, or 66%, visited to meet relatives and friends.

Total tourism expenditure, i.e. expenditure by Turkish citizens resident in Turkey while on a visit abroad, fell by 75% on the year to $1.1 billion last year. Some $953.9 million of total expenditures were individual expenditures and $150.7 million were package tour expenditures.
