Two people have been declared dead after a small plane crash on Thursday afternoon near Telluride Regional Airport. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the single-engine Vans RV-4 airplane crashed about a half-mile east of the airport. Investigators said the aircraft was preparing to land at the airport when it crashed and the individuals killed were the only people onboard.

As per updates provided by San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, the single-engine plane was approaching the airport at around 1:30 p.m. when the airport lost contact with the aircraft and several witnesses reported seeing the plane go down. The sheriff’s office said the crash site was located around 2:30 P.M. and the scene is still being investigated.

Members of the San Miguel Sheriff’s Office, San Miguel Search and Rescue, Telluride Fire Department/EMS, and the San Miguel County Coroner are also working to recover the victims. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will also investigate the cause of the crash.
