UK Tightens Immigration Policies as Work and Study Visas Drop in 2024

The UK government has continued its stringent approach to immigration in 2024, leading to a notable decline in the number of visas granted to third-country nationals. New data from the Home Office indicates that the number of work-related visas has seen a significant reduction compared to the previous year, marking a shift in the country’s labor and migration policies.

Work Visas Decline but Remain Above Pre-Pandemic Levels

According to official figures, the UK issued 210,098 work-related visas in 2024. This marks a 37% decrease from 2023 but remains 53% higher than in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge in work visa approvals in the years following the pandemic was largely attributed to labor shortages, particularly in the healthcare sector.

However, as labor market conditions stabilized, the necessity for large-scale recruitment of foreign workers diminished. This shift is most evident in the healthcare sector, where the issuance of ‘Health and Care Worker’ visas fell drastically. In 2024, the UK granted just 27,174 of these visas to primary applicants, representing an 81% decline compared to 2023.

Study Visas Experience a Sharp Decline

The issuance of student visas has also seen a downward trend. After reaching a record high of 498,068 study visas in 2023, the number plummeted to 393,125 in 2024, marking a 14% year-on-year decline.

One of the key factors behind this drop is the tightening of regulations regarding dependents of international students. Under the new rules, only postgraduate students engaged in research-based programs are allowed to bring their families to the UK. The Home Office has acknowledged that such policy shifts significantly impact visa application trends. Despite this recent decline, study visa numbers remain 46% higher than pre-pandemic levels when annual approvals averaged around 200,000.

Family Visas on the Rise Amid Policy Changes

In contrast to the declining numbers in work and study visas, family-related visa applications have been on an upward trajectory for the fourth consecutive year. In 2024, the UK recorded 91,899 family visa applications, reflecting a 16% increase from the previous year.

This surge was driven by the UK government’s decision to introduce a higher minimum income requirement for sponsoring family members. Announced in December 2023, this policy change was set to take effect in April 2024. The impending implementation led to a rush of applications between January and March, as applicants sought to secure visas before the stricter requirements came into force.

Policy Shifts Continue to Shape Immigration Trends

The fluctuations in visa issuance reflect the UK government’s evolving stance on immigration. While work visas saw a decline following post-pandemic labor market stabilization, and study visas dropped due to policy adjustments, the rising number of family visa applications suggests that many migrants are prioritizing reunification under the existing rules before further restrictions are imposed.

With immigration remaining a key issue in the UK’s political landscape, further adjustments to visa policies are likely in the coming years. The impact of these changes will continue to shape the movement of third-country nationals seeking opportunities in the UK, as the government balances economic demands with immigration control.
