The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for heavy fog, warning that travel chaos could strike large parts of the UK today, with a high chance of flight cancellations and significant delays to transport services.

The first yellow weather warning, which took effect at 4 a.m. and is set to expire at 10 a.m., affects Manchester and parts of Stoke-on-Trent. This fog warning could lead to slower journey times, with delays to bus and train services expected across the affected areas.

The Met Office has advised that visibility could drop dramatically, potentially causing traffic accidents and creating hazardous driving conditions, particularly on the roads.

As a result of the heavy fog, the Met Office has cautioned motorists to drive with extra care. Drivers are advised to ensure they know where their fog lights are and use them when visibility falls below 100 meters, which is roughly the length of a football pitch.

It is also recommended to maintain a greater distance between vehicles to prevent collisions, and experts have advised against using full beam headlights, as the light will reflect off the fog, worsening visibility.

There are concerns that the fog could disrupt air travel, with the Met Office adding that there is a chance of flight delays or cancellations as a result of poor visibility at airports.

The fog could particularly impact airport operations in and around Manchester and other areas covered by the warning. Passengers flying today are urged to check the status of their flights before traveling to airports to avoid unnecessary delays.

The second yellow fog warning stretches across the east of England, covering areas from York to Cambridge, including much of Peterborough. This fog warning, issued for similar reasons, is expected to create travel issues for commuters and travelers in the eastern parts of the country. Like the first warning, the Met Office predicts delays to road, rail, and air services, with the possibility of flight cancellations in affected regions.

Despite the fog, the rest of the day is expected to be dry, with sunny spells and light breezes across much of the UK. However, the early morning fog is likely to cause continued disruptions to travel, especially in the most heavily affected regions, as well as delays to local transportation.

For those planning to travel today, the Met Office urges travelers to take extra precautions and check for any service updates on public transportation or flights. It is important to allow extra time for journeys and be aware of the weather conditions that could affect travel times.
