UNCTAD, Mauritius signs memorandum of understanding to develop new centre of excellence

UNCTAD and Mauritius has join hands to open a new centre of excellence for fisheries sector in developing countries along with other African and Asian countries to improve their fisheries sectors.

 

 

Centre will bring together experts, researchers and policymakers from least developed countries and other African and Asian countries to develop their fisheries sectors.

 

 

On May 6 the memorandum of understanding was signed between UNCTAD and Mauritius in Quatre Bornes. It is expected that the centre will serve as a practical site for putting policy recommendations for the least developed countries.

 

 

 

Paul Akiwumi, director of UNCTAD’s division for Africa and least developed countries said that this includes providing support to training activities and building institutional, as well as regulatory capacities of developing countries.

 

 

 

For African and Asian countries the centre will be hosting capacity-building events , it will harness the potential of their fisheries and aquaculture sectors for sustainable growths, transformations and poverty alleviation.

 

 

 

 

Virendra Daby, the permanent secretary of the Mauritian ministry said that the fisheries sector in Mauritius has great potential to boost growth, employment and food security.
Due to the training provided by the centre would increase the expertise and technical knowledge of governments to formulate the implement exports development and diversification strategies to tap the fisheries sector in LDCs.

 

Mr. Akiwumi said that many LDCs and small island developing states from Africa and other regions will benefit from the experience of Mauritius in the development of its domestic fisheries sector.

 

Several countries will  be gaining from the research capacities at the Mauritius Oceanography Institute and the Albion Fisheries Research Centre of Mauritius.
