United Airlines boosts travel connectivity by resuming nonstop flights between Albuquerque and Washington Dulles, reconnecting the two cities after a decade.
United Airlines is preparing to reinstate its nonstop service between Washington, DC, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, positioning itself as the second carrier connecting the Washington–Baltimore metropolitan region with Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ).
According to data sources, including AeroRoutes and Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool, United Airlines will relaunch its Albuquerque–Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) service in late May.
Initially, the route will be operated using an Airbus A319ceo before transitioning to the Boeing 737-700. The service is currently scheduled to continue until December, though future adjustments remain possible.

United last operated this route in April 2014, marking the end of an eight-year run that began in September 2006. Its return signals a renewed commitment to connecting the two cities after a decade-long absence.
While United withdrew from Albuquerque, Southwest Airlines maintained service to the Washington–Baltimore area, operating up to two daily flights between ABQ and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) between January 2001 and August 2020. However, Southwest temporarily suspended the route during the pandemic before reintroducing it in March 2021 with limited weekly flights. Over time, the carrier ramped up service, offering as many as 12 flights per week in some months.

Southwest Airlines continues to operate the Albuquerque–Baltimore route using a mix of Boeing 737 aircraft, including the 737-700, 737-800, and 737 MAX 8, with seating capacities ranging from 143 to 175 passengers.
United’s reentry into the Albuquerque–Washington market will provide travelers with another option for direct flights, increasing competition and enhancing connectivity between the Southwest and the nation’s capital.

Despite increasing competition, Southwest Airlines continues to hold the top position at Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ). Of the 614 total weekly flights scheduled from the airport in June, Southwest is expected to operate 253 departures, accounting for 41.2% of Albuquerque’s total air traffic.
American Airlines ranks as the second-largest carrier at ABQ, with 116 weekly flights planned for June. United Airlines follows closely, scheduling 97 weekly departures during the same period. However, United is projected to be the airport’s fastest-growing airline, increasing its flight operations by 27 weekly departures. This expansion represents a 39.8% rise in available seat kilometers (ASK) compared to June 2024, highlighting its rapid growth trajectory.
United’s Albuquerque operations will focus exclusively on five key destinations—all of which serve as the airline’s major hub airports. These include:
To service these routes, United Airlines will deploy a diverse mix of aircraft, including Airbus A319 and A320 models, various Boeing 737 variants (737-700, 737-800, 737-900, and 737 MAX 8), as well as regional aircraft such as the Embraer E145 and E175, and the Mitsubishi CRJ700 (formerly known as the Bombardier CRJ700).
United’s Albuquerque departures will offer an average of 100.4 seats per flight, a figure notably lower than Southwest Airlines’ 157.9 seats per departure for the month. While Southwest maintains a stronghold in Albuquerque with its extensive operations and larger aircraft capacity, United’s growth signals a strategic push to expand its footprint in the region.
