In spite of a powerful bounce back in the summers 2021, international tourist arrivals to Europe, by the end of this year are predicted to get 60% down 2019.

Tourist arrivals from Europe dropped 77% half-way through the year relative to 2019.

In the months of June (-69%), July (-57%) and August (-49%), European air passenger growth gained momentum compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Even though European travel insisting on a major recovery because of high vaccination rates in Europe, still, volumes are far from the days that the country experienced in the pre-pandemic days. Situation is not expected to get better until 2024. The most recent edition of the ‘European Tourism Trends & Prospects’ quarterly report from the European Travel Commission (ETC) keeps on monitoring the effect of COVID-19 on the sector, seeing the way travel activity is bouncing back in the middle of the current wave of infections and ongoing vaccination program.

To quote Luís Araújo, ETC’s President,“From our latest ‘European Tourism Trends & Prospects’ quarterly report, it is clear to see the critical role vaccination programmes have already played in helping travel rebound. The COVID-19 vaccine rollout was vital to the easing of entry requirements and boosting the appeal of travel during the summer season. However, vaccination efforts won’t be enough. As the winter months approach, it is imperative that Europe strives to further restore the freedom of movement by implementing more holistic and coherent approaches for travel within and outside the EU.”

At present, in the world, Europe has the highest vaccination rate which is expected to allow the release of major pent-up demand. In fact, by now, European destinations relished quite a good summers than expected, owing to successful vaccination programs.
