On Tuesday, the director of the TAT’s Phuket Office, Nanthasiri Ronnasiri, explained that hotel rooms in Phuket before the pandemic used to be 75% booked. However, in 2020, the hotel reservation rate dropped to 19.47% and 7.75% in last year.

As the economy of Phuket is immensely dependent on the tourism sector, the government has adopted guidelines that would help in increasing the demand.

The proportion of domestic tourists increased to 80% of the total 2021, the same level as international visitors before the 2019 from the time Rao Tiew Duay Kan tourism stimulus campaign was introduction, said Ms Nanthasiri.

In addition, she stated that over 200,000 tourists from foreign countries had come to Phuket with the introduction of the Sandbox scheme from July to December 2021.

Almost 1.73 million tourists visited Phuket, from the onset of 2022 to May 31st, of them 132,472 were local tourists, Ms Nanthasiri mentioned.

From the tourist spending, Phuket has earned 26.5 billion baht of which 14.4 billion baht was acquired from the Thais. This showed a rise in domestic tourist numbers of late, she said.

Phuket has revived much rapidly compared to other provinces, as a tourism-reliant economy, with reservation rate in hotels for the first five months of 2022 stood at 28.27% on average, Ms Nanthasiri said.

For tourists in the South, Phuket is the most preferred and oft visited province as per Ms Nanthasiri.
