UNWTO leaders assemble for building resilient and sustainable tourism

Tourism frontrunners from Asia and the Pacific have placed creatingflexibility and acceptanceof innovation at the core of the tourism sector’s revival and sustainable future.

The 34th combined meeting of the UNWTO commission for East Asia and the Pacific as well as the UNWTO commission for South Asia was held with destinations throughout the region starting towelcome back tourists from round the world.

The Asia-Pacific region was affected first and affected the hardest by the pandemic’s influence on tourism,withseveral countries implementing strict travel restrictions. With the UNWTO statistics confirming a 64% upsurge in worldwide arrivals during the first quarter of this year compared to last year, this significant assembly of the leaders of the sector recognized the main challenges and prospectslying ahead.

ZurabPololikashvili, the Secretary-Generalof the UNWTO gave an insight into the tourism inclinations and statistics, both for the Asia-Pacific region and internationally. Afterwards, there was an update regarding the UNWTO’s work during the months from the time when the previous joint commission meeting was held.

Pololikashvilistressed the significance of working collectively to dismiss travel constraints. He said that harmonization is important for restarting tourism and for bringing backassurancefor international travel.

He added that for millions of people in the Asia and the Pacific, tourism is a vitalsupport. Hence, its comeback iscrucial and it must be grounded around the mainstays of inclusion and sustainability. It would benefit all.
