Central to Anantara’s ethos of personalized luxury and genuine experiences is the dedicated effort of Oriana Migliaccio, a marine biologist whose passion for the conservation of the ocean shines brightly in the azure waters of the Maldives. As a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer with a PhD in Life and Biomolecular Sciences, Oriana exemplifies the essence of exploration and protection across Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort, Anantara Veli Maldives Resort and Naladhu Private Island Maldives.

Originating from the sunny coastlines of Naples, Italy, Oriana’s childhood was immersed in the marvels of the Mediterranean Sea, known for its rich biodiversity. Her frequent visits to the aquarium during winter breaks ignited a profound affection for the marine environment, propelling her towards a career in marine biology. Pursuing her dreams, Oriana achieved her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Marine Biology in Italy before moving to the Maldives for a master’s degree in Tropical Marine Biology. There, she focused on coral reef biology and conservation, a passion that led to her earning a PhD in the UK, reinforcing her dedication to marine ecosystem preservation.

In the Maldives, Oriana’s expertise, previously developed in Borneo as a Conservation Manager and Dive Leader, now thrives. Her work encompasses coral reef restoration, sea turtle protection, and promoting sustainable practices crucial for the local marine ecosystem. A notable accomplishment is the establishment of the “Reef Hero” PADI specialty course, educating divers about coral conservation and inspiring a new generation of guardians for the ocean. In April 2023, Oriana’s role at Anantara transcended conventional roles, engaging guests in marine conservation through diverse activities:

Following the significant coral bleaching event in 2016, Oriana has played a key role in Anantara’s HARP initiative (Holistic Approach to Reef Protection), focused on the recovery of damaged coral reefs. With more than 10,000 corals planted since 2017, the initiative aims to double this figure, enriching marine biodiversity. Guests are encouraged to become coral gardeners, contributing to the initiative’s success and receiving updates on their adopted corals.

Oriana’s collaboration with renowned organizations such as the Olive Ridley Project, Manta Trust, and the Maldives Whale Shark Research Program includes a photo-ID project for studying sea turtles, manta rays, and whale sharks, inviting guests to participate as citizen scientists in data collection during their dives.

Oriana Migliaccio’s work embodies the core of Anantara’s luxury experience: distinctive, engaging, and closely tied to the environment. Her enthusiasm and commitment not only aim to preserve the beauty of the ocean but also motivate guests to engage in its protection, ensuring its splendor persists for future generations.
