Shenandoah County has started celebrating the National Travel and Tourism Week, but it looks somewhat different this time around.

The event is going digitally but will continue to highlight local businesses to “honour the spirit of travel in recognition of the industry’s strength, selflessness and resiliency, even in the face of adversity.”

The celebration will continue through Saturday, concluding with a celebration of family and friends, a news release states.

On Sunday, Shenandoah County Tourism and Economic Development kicked off the week by sharing #SpiritOfTravel and #ShenCoStrong! hashtags with a video on social media.

Visit Shenandoah County, Virgini, states that they cannot encourage, they are cannot encourage folks to visit, they still want to celebrate all of the great things to do and places to see in Shenandoah County, and hopefully give everyone a little taste of our beautiful region, because when our stay at home orders are lifted, we will be waiting for you.

Here in Shenandoah County, sometimes it can seem like the world is far away. But these days, the world is closer than ever,” the video notes while portraying scenes from around the county. “That’s why they are all doing our part staying safer by staying at home, supporting the local businesses we all love and always remembering before we know it we’ll be back doing the things we love most in what we think is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Today, online shopping will be highlighted. Tuesday will be Take Out Tuesday, showcasing area lunch and dinner options for takeout, pick-up or delivery. On Wednesday, multiple virtual tours will be given at VisitShenandoahCounty.com as well as its social media accounts. Thursday is Thirsty Thursday, highlighting local places to find alcoholic beverages. Friday has been dubbed Fresh Air Friday, where folks are encouraged to enjoy “scenic drives and majestic views of the county.” The finale on Saturday will be highlight local meats to conclude with a virtual backyard BBQ.

“Celebrating the spirit of travel shows the resiliency of our communities as they carry on in this crisis by supporting their neighbors and our local economy,” said Brenda Black, Tourism & Economic Development Coordinator for Shenandoah County. “When it is safe to travel again, and we can once again welcome back consumers, travel will be what moves us forward once again, and tourism will be a vital part of our local, regional and Virginia’s overall economic recovery.”

National Travel and Tourism Week is an annual tradition created by the U.S. Travel Association when travel and tourism professionals across the country unite to celebrate the value travel holds for the economy, businesses and personal wellbeing.
