Visitor numbers from abroad in Japan dropped in June compared to the month before, even after the country startedadopting measures to reopen its boundariesfor tourists for the first time in over two years.

In June, the number of foreign tourist arrivals was 120,400 compared to 147,000 in May, as per data released from the Japan National Tourism Organization. Japan on the recordstartedletting in tourists on June 10, doubling the everydayadmissionmaximum to 20,000 visitors.

Although the score doesn’t provide ananalysis on the category of visitors, the deteriorationis an indication that Japan isn’t witnessing a delugein tourist numbers, although a weaker yen has made travel more reasonable. Tourists are still restricted to group tours with stringentmeasures, including compulsory wearing of masks, checking of temperature and restriction in free movement, making it toughfor planning for and attracting visitors.

The number also lagged behindoverall visitors in April, when in March Japan increased the regular number of worldwide arrivals permissible after opening up for students, entrepreneurs and other workers.

The largest chunk of visitors came from Vietnam, followed by China, and South Korea. Prior to the pandemic, Japan witnessed a tourism explosion, with incoming visitors setting a record in 2019. Currently, Japan is one of the last remaining opulent economies with stringent border restrictions. Visitor numbers in June dropped by 96% compared to the same month three years before.
