The National Tourism Board of Portugal, more broadly known as VisitPortugal, is observing what Luis Araújo, the president of the group, is calling the best-ever year of the country related to tourism. The rebounding of Portugal in terms of visitor arrivals come only two years after the shutdowns related to COVID-19 paralyzed the crucial tourism industry of the country.

At the forefront of the tourism revival, American travelers have remained so far. The 1.1 million U.S. visitors Portugal drew in all of 2019 have by now been attained in 2022.

The country’s growing popularity is being doubling down by VisitPortugal with U.S. travelers, working with all the main travel advisors and operators and improving its marketing effort of the country in many U.S. cities.

Visit Portugal, in the past week, affiliated with Madame Tussauds Wax Museum to reveal Cristiano Ronaldo’s life-sized statue in Times Square, New York. In the event, brought to the forefront, the most recognized global figure of Portugal to the travelers’ attention in the country’s largest city.

In the unveiling ceremony, videos and images of the multiple environments of Portugal, starting right from verdant forests and beach areas to historic Lisbon, was seen in almost every electronic billboard in the “Crossroads of the World.” Now, at the Wax Museum, the life-like statue is on full display.

We had a talk with Araújo about the unveiling ceremony, the Times Square billboard takeover and the campaign of VisitPortugal to expand its U.S. visitor base further.
