Due to reduced passenger numbers Wellington Airport is proposing to cut up to 30 per cent of its workforce, Wellington Airport chief executive Steve Sanderson said the airport was consulting with its staff on a proposal to resize the organisation because of significantly reduced passenger numbers.
Sanderson said that over the last few weeks, we have been able to get a clearer picture about the impact of Covid-19 on the travel and tourism industry in New Zealand and overseas.Like many businesses, Wellington Airport and the wider community have been significantly affected.
Even when domestic air travel picks up, it will take a long time before passenger numbers return to normal levels, especially when combined with the loss of international travel and tourism.
Putting considerable cost measures in place and also ensuring the ongoing safety and security of its operations.Wellington Airport moved quickly when Covid-19 began affecting air travel.
It included deferring capital projects, reducing executive pay and all staff moving to a four-day week.
It is sad that they have reached the point where they have no other option but to resize team to match the sustained reduction in our passenger numbers.
In the coming week the airport after consulting staff is expected to finalise the structure, it is expected that 30 per cent roles will be affected.
Sanderson said that this is an incredibly difficult time for their people and their priority is on supporting them through this period.
