Wellness tourism grew by almost seven percent annually between 2015 and 2019 to USD $639 billion, which is more than twice as fast as tourism overall. The sector is forecast to reach $919 billion by 2022. While Europe might be the most popular destination regarding wellness travel, it’s North America that rakes in the big bucks, earning the maximum in tourism revenue at $242 billion annually.

Wellness tourism is travel for the purpose of maintaining or improving health; however, it is not to be mixed with medical tourism, which involves travel to seek a specific medical treatment.

Overall, in 2017, travelers globally made 830 million wellness trips, which is 139 million more than in 2015. Although Europe and North America may lead the wellness tourism market currently, wellness trips in Asia-Pacific have grown 33 percent in the last two years, making it the fastest growing market. Between 2017 and 2022, wellness tourism is also expected to grow 13 percent in Asia-Pacific to reach $252 billion in revenue. Within the region, China and India are the strongest performers.
