As per the Global Wellness Economy Monitor, Australia occupies the top five spot in terms of wellness tourism markets in the Asia Pacific. The clean, green environment along with indigenous plants with health properties in Australia with special emphasis on cultural traditions offers a competitive advantage for this country as a destination for wellness tourism.
Wellness tourism comprises experiences which directly tell about maintaining or developing personal wellbeing, like visiting a health spa, sanctuary or wellbeing centre. Australia proudly brags of numerous areas of high natural amenity which lend themselves toward wellness tourism. Byron Bay in New South Wales and Daylesford in Victoria have come into limelight as wellness destinations because of their variety of health and wellness activities to attract tourists. These offerings are more and more appealing to a large number of health-conscious tourists who are willing to spend on their wellbeing.
To quote John O’Sullivan, Tourism Australia’s Managing Director, “Globally, wellness tourism is growing twice as fast as the tourism industry overall. With our many natural advantages, Australia is particularly well placed to capitalise upon a sector which clearly presents some very exciting tourism investment opportunities.”
