Brooklyn-based upscale luxury hotel, West Elm Hotels is partnering with Detroit developer to build a new upscale hotel for the luxurious and business travellers in Detroit’s Midtown.
Roxbury Group is developing the Detroit West Elm Hotel, with plans to break ground in 2019 and complete it by 2020. The hotel will be on Woodward Avenue and Elliott Street for the company known for its modern chic furniture.
Detroit will be one of six locations in the nation with a full-service West Elm Hotel.
Roxbury is known for developing the Aloft Hotel in the historic David Whitney Building, along with the under-construction Element Hotel by Westin in the Metropolitan Building.
The West Elm Hotels will help meet the growing demand for more hotel rooms in Midtown Detroit, the city’s premier cultural and education district that has long served as a global tourist destination.
Birmingham-based Professional Property Management is leasing the 15,000-square-foot site to Roxbury for an undisclosed cost. Roxbury Group is also working with Wayne State University to potentially incorporate a restored Bonstelle Theatre into the plan. The Bonstelle was originally built as a temple in 1903.
It became a theatre in 1925, later serving Wayne State University’s theater program.
Additionally, West Elm will provide training opportunities for residents to learn about the hospitality industry.
