A crash on westbound Interstate 10 (I-10) near the US 60 and State Route 143 (SR 143) interchange caused major traffic disruptions on Sunday evening.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the incident was first reported at approximately 7:11 p.m., with the collision blocking the center and right lanes near 40th Street.
By 8:10 p.m., ADOT confirmed that the left and High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes had reopened, but the center and right lanes remained closed.
As of Sunday night, officials did not provide an estimated time for the full reopening of the highway.
The crash initially affected the center and right lanes, forcing authorities to shut down a section of I-10 westbound.
The situation prompted immediate traffic delays in the area.
The westbound collector-distributor (CD) lanes near milepost 152 remained open, allowing some flow of traffic, but congestion continued due to the lane restrictions.
While westbound lanes were impacted, the eastbound lanes remained fully operational, and ADOT confirmed that no closures were necessary in that direction.
However, due to the heavy congestion and partial lane closures, drivers were urged to expect delays and seek alternate routes if possible.
ADOT swiftly responded to the situation by deploying crews to assess the damage, clear debris, and manage traffic. Officials urged motorists to remain cautious and adhere to posted traffic signs in the area.
The department also advised commuters to stay updated by checking ADOT’s official traffic website, social media pages, or using real-time traffic applications to monitor road conditions.
While the highway was partially reopened, authorities warned that traffic congestion would persist until the full reopening of all lanes.
Drivers traveling westbound were encouraged to consider alternate routes to avoid long wait times and potential bottlenecks.
Local roads and alternative highways, including Loop 202 or Loop 101, were suggested as possible detours to bypass the affected area.
ADOT also emphasized the importance of driving cautiously near the crash site, as emergency crews and clean-up teams remained on-site.
As of late Sunday night, ADOT had not provided an estimate for when all lanes would be cleared and reopened.
Officials indicated that further updates would be given as progress was made in removing the accident debris and ensuring the roadway was safe for travel.
The partial reopening of westbound I-10 at US 60/SR 143 provided some relief for drivers, but lingering congestion and remaining lane closures meant that delays were still expected.
Authorities urged caution and patience as crews worked to fully reopen the highway.
Commuters were encouraged to stay informed through official ADOT updates for real-time traffic changes.
