On Tuesday, White House officials asked people who left New York City in recent days to quarantine for two weeks in the location they are currently present. The announcement came in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The decision has been undertaken in order to prevent coronavirus spread to other regions. Authorities fear that New Yorkers may have unknowingly contracted the coronavirus before leaving the city and traveling to other places.
Dr. Deborah Birx, Coronavirus Coordinator, White House officially announced in a recent press brief that everybody who was in New York and is now traveling to other locations should be self-quarantined for the next 14 days. The measure has been taken to ensure that the virus does not spread to others irrespective of where people have traveled, whether it’s Florida, North Carolina, or out to far reaches of Long Island. She also mentioned that authorities have begun to notice new cases across Long Island which also means people have left New York City. She said that the situation can be very critical.
New York has reported more than 25,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and is being considered as the epicenter of the COVID-19 disease in the U.S. Mike Pence, Vice President, United States of America said that New York City Metropolitan Area is a high-risk zone.
According to the latest self-quarantine recommendation, 14-day isolation would also apply to people who are not showing any symptoms of the coronavirus disease. Dr. Birx also mentioned in her statement that travelers from New York are mostly headed towards locations outside the city especially from Long Island to North Carolina or other states.
The recommendation arrived after the Florida Government issued an order on Tuesday. Governor Ron DeSantis informed that any individual flying to Florida from New York, New Jersey or Connecticut has to self-isolate for 14 days upon their arrival. On the other hand, Alaska and Hawaii have also declared two weeks of self-quarantine for anyone arriving from other states.
New York residents have already been ordered to stay in their homes and the city has been in a virtual shut down as a response to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
