Wizz Air is worst major airline for flight delays from UK airports

Hungarian airline Wizz Air has been named as the worst major airline for flight delays from United Kingdom airports for the second year in a row, according to analysis of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data.

Wizz Air’s United Kingdom departures were an average of 46 minutes and six seconds behind schedule last year, with Tui recording the second-worst punctuality, with an average delay of 40 minutes and 18 seconds. Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Pegasus Airlines also featured on the list of the worst-performing airlines. Norwegian Air Shuttle was named as the best-performing airline, with an average delay of just 13 minutes and 42 seconds.

Consumer group Which? described the figures as “worrying,” and criticized the regulator for not having appropriate powers to punish airlines who break the law, including withholding refunds. The worst months for punctuality were May and June, as the aviation sector struggled to recruit and train enough staff to cope with a surge in demand for holidays following the end of the UK’s coronavirus travel rules.

The analysis by the Press Association took into account all scheduled and chartered departures from UK airports by airlines with more than 2,500 flights, with cancelled flights not included. The average delay for all these flights was 23 minutes.

Delays and cancellations can cause significant inconvenience for passengers and lead to financial losses for airlines. Improving punctuality is essential for maintaining customer satisfaction and loyalty. Airlines need to invest in better training and recruitment practices to ensure they can cope with the increased demand for travel. Additionally, regulators should have more powers to enforce the law and penalize airlines that fail to meet their obligations to passengers. By taking these steps, airlines can improve their performance and restore confidence in the industry.
