The World Committee on Tourism Ethics is a neutral committee. This governing body reports directly to the UNWTO General Assembly. Recently, it met under a new chair with a new composition. The Committee decided to publish the following statement:

The World Committee on Tourism Ethics, commended UN Secretary-General’s statement that the war in Ukraine is ethically not acceptable, politically vulnerable and militarily nonsensical. It’s a firm belief that for peace, friendship and mutual understanding, tourism is a vital force. The Secretary General requests the Russian Federation to end this war against Ukraine. It’s putting millions of lives at major risk. This continuing invasion is threatening their peace and security. The Committee guided by Article 1 of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, requests for efforts to extend peace negotiations in accordance to the United Nations Charter’s fundamental principles.

Though the right to tourism is compulsorily taken away during such conflicting times, tourism always acts as a reminder of the importance in terms of dialogue exchange, peace, and sustainable development among countries.

The WCTE functions are to understand, relate, and assess the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism provisions, besides making sure the encouragement of its ethical principles and the keeping a tab of its practical implementation by governments and the private sector.
