The World Tourism Day events organised by the Government Arts College and the State government had many means to carry the allure of tourism to the student community.

Capturing the fancy of 90’s kids with street food and the internet generation using memes, the events proved to be very successful.

The two-day event, which began on Thursday, was organised to observe the World Tourism Day on Friday. The theme, announced by UN’s World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) this year, is ‘Tourism and Jobs’. It seeks to take tourism to the grassroots and through it provide employment to local communities.

A Saravanan, the head of the department of tourism and travel management at the college, said they had put up street food stalls on the campus to signify how small businesses benefit from tourism. “Not only big travel firms profit from the inflow of tourists, but also small road-side shops. We want to highlight this through our students,” he said.

Data from UNWTO says of 10 jobs generated in the world, one is from tourism sector. But we have to make tourism a sustainable sector by incorporating local communities, thereby alleviating their poverty and also sensitise them towards nature.

A total of 382 students from various colleges in the region participated in competitions such as quiz, meme making, pitching business ideas, handicraft making and fruit carving.
