World’s longest commercial flight to be launched by Singapore Airlines

Singapore AirlinesThe world’s longest commercial flight will be launched by the Singapore Airlines in October. It will be a near-19 hour non-stop journey from Singapore to the New York area and the 15,329 kilometre flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey will be shadowing the Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Auckland as the world’s longest. It will have 161 business class and premium economy seats. This was according to the airline data provider OAG.

Singapore Airlines, Australia’s Qantas Airways Ltd and U.S.-based United Continental Holdings Inc are adding ultra-long haul flights capturing  an airfare premium of around 20 percent versus flights that involves  one or more stops.

Until 2013 the Singapore Airlines has flown the marathon flights, due to the high fuel prices made the use of four-engine Airbus SE A340-500 jets uneconomic.  Singapore-Newark flight will mark the return of the popular route for Singapore Airlines.

So far,Singapore Airlines is Airbus’ first and to date only customer for the A350-900ULR which is an ultra-long range version of the fuel-efficient twin-engine A350 jet.

It has been reported that Qantas was considering the purchase of the A350-900ULR or Boeing Co’s 777X to allow it to fly non-stop from Sydney to London from 2022. This is supposed to be an even longer 9,200 nautical mile journey.

Singapore Airlines also plans to introduce non-stop flights from Singapore to Los Angeles with the A350-900ULR at a later date.

In September it is expected that the airline will receive its first A350-900ULR .  All seven will be delivered by the end of the year.
