In April, WTTC, which represents the global private sector of travel and tourism, announced the agreement of a common agenda with UN Climate Change, an international treaty which aims for the stabilisation of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, paving way for tourism to engage more effectively in the delivery of global goals around climate change.

A common agenda was announced earlier this year by WTTC and UN Climate Change aiming for the stabilization of greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere to further engagement of tourism for effectively delivering global goals around climate change.

The links between tourism and climate change was presented at the at the UN Climate Conference in Katowice, Poland, during the first tourism event ever held at the annual COP by both the organisation. They also showed a pathway for the sector on how to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Gloria Guevara, president, WTTC, said ahead of the event at COP24, that  travel and tourism plays an important role around the world in economic development and currently accounts for 10.4 per cent of global GDP.

It  supports one in ten of all jobs, which is more than comparative sectors like as automotive, chemicals manufacturing, banking and financial services.

Tourism plays an important role in driving climate neutrality considering the sector’s contribution to social and economic development which functions under the auspices of the UN Climate Change body.

She announced that they will continue to work with UN Climate Change to bring forth to consumers the positive contribution tourism  has on building climate resilience;the establishment of an industry recognition scheme; and the creation of an annual State of the Climate event and report to evaluate, monitor and share progress towards climate neutrality.

Tourism being a world sector plays a strong part in the bright future.UN Climate Change executive secretary, Patricia Espinosa urged the tourism sector to find new, innovative and sustainable ways to reduce its carbon footprint.
