15 dead, Indonesia ferry sinks off Madura

The latest maritime accident had hit Indonesia killing at least 15 people on Tuesday. A passenger ferry sank off the Indonesia island of Java which was carrying around 50 people when in overturned on Monday near the Madura island.

 

On Tuesday morning search and rescue teams found 13 bodies that brought he total number of dead to 15 and there were 31 survivors.

 

 

Three people are still missing and rescuers are searching for them and as per local reports there might be more victims which is not on the official manifest.

 

As per sources the boat was overloaded after being hit by a large wave, it overturned and sank. Fisherman found the 10-metre long traditional vessel shortly after it was swamped.

 

 

Indonesia, an archipelago nation of more than 17,000 islands is prone to marine accidents and despite poor safety standards many use ferries and other boats to travel.

 

 

Last year more than  160 people died after a passenger ferry sunk into the depths of one of the world’s deepest lakes on Sumatra island.
