After Vinepair.com named Richmond, Virginia the number one beer destination in the world for this year, the craft beer industry can now raise their glasses for a toast.
Increasing to 32 breweries in the area from handful in around 10 years has surely landed Richmond in quite a few headlines of major national publications. Richmond leads cities like Boise, Louisville, St. Louis, Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, Beijing, Madison, Chicago, and New York in the latest article, written by Cat Wolinski, as the number one world beer destination.
The breweries that Wolinski highlighted in her publication were An Bui’s Mekong and adjoining brewpub, The Answer, The Veil, Ardent Craft Ales, Triple Crossing, and Carytown’s Garden Grove Brewing and Urban Winery.
Wolinski, a Brooklyn-based beer and travel writer has written in depth related to her Richmond travels (she was here late December) on her blog, BeerAffair.com. Side by side, she collected lot of praise for Garden Grove on her own website, where she emphasized that the mead/sake and beer/wine hybrids “blow her mind.” She said that owner brewer Mike Brandt was “one of the most interesting people” she has ever met.
Also, in her own website, she described in detail about her visit to Weezie’s Kitchen and Ardent Ales. She did mention that Ardent Ales created the way for the craft beer explosion in Scott’s Addition in 2014, even though technically Isley Brewing was the first to open, in 2013.
