To safeguard Koala, Longleat is conducting an international breeding and awareness-building programme. Australia’s iconic and increasingly threatened Koala will be protected through this.
The Wiltshire estate during later half of the year will be receiving a group of up to six southern koalas from the Cleland Wildlife Park which is located in Adelaide. In 1996 outside Africa, Wiltshire estate opened the world’s first drive through safari.
The koalas after spending time in quarantine along with its closest relative the wombats will be moved into purpose-built area.
There will be a natural stream, eucalyptus trees, climbing poles, naturally-themed indoor and outdoor habitats, viewing areas, interpretation boards and a Koala Care unit in the Koala Creek.
Longleat has also developed a 4,000- tree eucalyptus plantation and a dedicated full-time browser manager was appointed to monitor the koala’s main food source.
Viscount Weymouth Ceawlin Thynn, who is International Patron for the organisation statedthat the Australian native species are a source of great fascination around the world. He felt privileged to share important conservation message with the visitors.
To ensure that the koalas have their favourite food on hand they have planted eucalyptus tea.
