In the Airport Carbon Accreditation program Quito International Airport has achieved carbon neutrality.
The United Nations International Civil Aviation Organisation, the World Bank and the United States Federal Aviation Administration has technically endorsed the system created by Airports Council International.
In the entire Latin American and Caribbean region Quito Airport has become the first international airport to achieve neutrality.
Corporación Quiport is one of the pioneers of this program and had joined Airport Carbon Accreditation in 2015.
Andrew O’Brian, chief executive of Quiport said that Corporación Quiport’s initiatives to achieve this important accomplishment have included concrete actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce fuel consumption, increase energy efficiency, improve water management, maintain conservation areas for flora and fauna and more.
Emissions for 2018 were measured in July 2019 and Quito Airport’s carnon footprint was calculated at 3,273 tons of CO2 emissions. This showed a 41 per cent reduction as compared to 2014.
To stay at the level of ACA program it was important to note that carbon neutrality should be achieved and a plan must be set in place to reduce the greenhouse gas emission.
To avoid increasing the carbon footprint, as well as offset emissions for another year the airport will recalculate the carbon footprint and maintain or reduce the levels of emissions each year.
O’Brain said that they will continue to work so that their efforts go beyond Quiport’s operations; till date they have amplified their impact by getting 26 companies at the airport, from airlines to commercial operators, to start their own initiatives to reduce their carbon footprints.
