Puerto Rico is witnessing a slump in tourism as San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport reported a drop of over five percent in passenger traffic in August 2026, indicating weaker domestic and international travel demand.

The Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan handled 1,126,633 passengers in August 2026, representing a 5.1% decline compared with the same month in 2025. The drop marked another challenging period for Puerto Rico’s leading aviation gateway, with passenger numbers falling by nearly 60,000 travellers year-on-year.

The latest figures indicate that the slowdown has continued through 2026, with the airport recording a decline of 334,915 passengers during the first eight months of the year. The reduction has mainly been driven by weaker domestic travel, which remains the largest passenger segment for Puerto Rico’s primary airport.

The San Juan Airport passenger decline became visible across both domestic and international operations during August. A total of 1,126,633 passengers passed through the airport during the month, compared with 1,186,630 passengers in August 2025.

The difference represented a loss of 59,997 passengers, highlighting softer travel demand during one of the important periods for Caribbean tourism.

The airport’s performance has become an important indicator for Puerto Rico tourism, as Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport serves as the island’s main commercial gateway. The largest impact on Puerto Rico aviation traffic has come from domestic passenger movement. Since Puerto Rico is a US territory, flights connecting the island with the mainland United States are classified as domestic routes.

During August 2026, domestic passenger traffic at San Juan Airport declined 4.9%, falling from 1,023,396 passengers in August 2025 to 973,038 passengers.

The decline has become more significant when viewed across the first eight months of 2026. Domestic passenger numbers reached 8,240,103, compared with 8,551,044 during the same period in 2025.

This represented a decrease of 310,941 domestic passengers.

International passenger traffic fell 5.9% in August 2026, with numbers declining from 163,234 passengers in August 2025 to 153,595 passengers.

Across the January-August period, international traffic reached 1,182,468 passengers, compared with 1,206,442 passengers during the same period in 2025.

The reduction of 23,974 international passengers represented a 2% decline.

International connectivity remains an important part of Puerto Rico’s tourism strategy, helping attract visitors from markets outside the United States. The island depends on air links to support leisure travel, cultural tourism, business visits and Caribbean regional movement.

San Juan Airport Performance Trails Wider ASUR Network

The passenger decline at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport was stronger than the overall performance recorded across the wider airport network operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR).

While San Juan recorded a 5.1% decline in August 2026, ASUR’s combined airport network reported a smaller decrease of 2.1% during the same month.

The network handled approximately 5.9 million passengers during August.

The difference was particularly visible in domestic passenger performance.

While ASUR’s overall domestic passenger traffic increased by 2.3%, San Juan Airport experienced a 4.9% domestic decline.

International traffic across ASUR’s network declined more sharply, falling 10.7%, compared with the 5.9% international decline recorded at San Juan Airport.

Despite the decline, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport continues to handle millions of passengers and remains the most important aviation gateway for Puerto Rico.

The airport’s role extends beyond passenger movement. It supports tourism growth, business connections, local employment and international accessibility.

The first eight months of 2026 still recorded more than 9.4 million passengers, demonstrating the airport’s continued importance for the island’s travel economy.

However, the over five percent passenger decline recorded in August 2026 signals that Puerto Rico’s aviation market is entering a period where maintaining demand, strengthening connectivity and attracting visitors from diverse markets will remain essential.

San Juan Airport reported more than 5% traffic reduction in the August 2026 as a decreased demand of domestic and international flights contributed to fewer passengers using the transportation infrastructure. The domestic traffic was the primary driver of the demand decrease.
