A tragedy struck in the Brazilian Amazon as a small propeller plane crashed during adverse weather conditions, resulting in the loss of 14 lives. The incident occurred as the aircraft was nearing the end of its 400-kilometer (248-mile) journey between Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, and the remote jungle town of Barcelos.

Among the victims were 12 passengers and two crew members. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the crash.

Initial reports suggest that the plane may have run out of runway during its descent into Barcelos due to heavy rain and poor visibility caused by the inclement weather. The aircraft in question was an EMB-110, a twin-engine turboprop manufactured by Brazilian aircraft-maker Embraer.

The plane was operated by Manaus Aerotáxi, and the company has stated that both the aircraft and its crew were compliant with all necessary requirements for flying.

Brazilian authorities and emergency response teams quickly mobilized to provide assistance and support. Amazonas Governor Wilson Lima expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and friends and affirmed the government’s commitment to aiding those affected by the tragedy.

The aircraft was chartered by a local businessman involved in game fishing in the region, and the passengers on board were friends from various parts of Brazil who shared an interest in the sport.

Barcelos is a popular tourist destination, located near several national parks and known for its vibrant biodiversity. September marks the start of the peak fishing season in Amazonas, drawing enthusiasts from around the country to explore its waters and its rich variety of ornamental fish, including the famed tucunaré, also known as peacock bass.

The victims’ bodies will be transported to Manaus for formal identification, as the investigation into the crash continues to unfold, shedding light on the circumstances that led to this tragic event in the heart of the Amazon.
