14 dead as winter storm hits Ukraine and Russia

At least 14 people died as severe winter storm lashed parts of Russia and Ukraine. It knocked out power from hundreds and thousands of households.

The winter “storm of the century” killed at least four people in Russia and occupied Crimea. Then it struck the southern part of the country over the weekend.

In Ukraine at least 10 people died. There were no power in almost 1,500 towns and villages.

This happened after storms dumped upto 10 inches of snow in some places.

Twenty-three people including two children got severe injuries .

The highest number of deaths reportedly were from the Odesa region. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said this in his nightly video address.

There was order for shutting down schools. Traffic came to a halt on 10 highways.

Southern Odesa, the Mykolaiv regions and central Kyiv experienced the brunts of the winter storm to worst extent.

Initially there were reports of power cut instances in 40,000 homes in the capital region.

Ukraine may experience more snowfall and rain on Tuesday, according to forecasters. Nearly 2,500 people were rescued following a snowstorm in Odesa, local governor Oleh Kiper said.

Rescuers also pulled out 849 vehicles including 24 buses and 17 ambulances from under the snow.

It also states the rescue of all those under the snow since the start of the snowstorm.

Dagestan, Krasnodar and Rostov, as well as the occupied Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea have been struggling with the violent weather conditions, the authorities said.

According to energy minister Nikolay Shulginov, power cuts in Russia, affected at least 1.9 million people.

Huge waves crashed over beachside areas of the Black Sea coast, killing one person.

In the resort cities of Sochi and Anapa, one person died and several people had injuries when the winter storm blew out hundreds of trees.

In neighbouring Moldova, four people died reporterdly during the cold snap that hit the region over the weekend.

Two bodies lay inside a car buried in a snowdrift in the southeastern area of Coscalia and another outside the capital.

Ukraine’s border service said that two border crossings in the Odesa region to Moldova reopened after a temporary suspension on Sunday. But traffic conditions remained difficult.

10 people died in Odesa, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kyiv regions. Interior minister Ihor Klymenko said on Tuesday.

This happened as a result of worsening weather conditions.
