Two Canadians who were kidnapped last week were rescued on Wednesday morning in a suburb of Kumasi by a police SWAT team. The two victims are safe as per the reports. The 19 and 20 year old Canadians were kidnapped in the Ashanti Regional Capital of Kumasi last week.
The driver of the vehicle used for the kidnapping and another person have since been arrested and are assisting the security agencies to unravel the identity of the others.
The Ghana Police Service in a statement signed by Director of Public Affairs ACP David Klu revealed that the incident happened at Ahodwo, Kumasi Royal Golf Club, at 8.25pm on 4 June 2019.
Earlier A tweet by the Canadian government on Thursday June 6, 2019 mentioned, “#Ghana: violent crimes, including armed robbery and kidnapping, may occur. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone or displaying signs of wealth. Ensure that windows and doors in your residence are secured”.
Canadian nationals in Ghana have been alerted of violent crimes in the country including armed robbery and kidnapping and urged not to show any signs of wealth.
The statement by Ministry of Information said that National Security Operatives completed the rescue operation in the ‘early hours of Wednesday 12 June, 2019.
The details of operation will be divulged in subsequent press briefing.
The Ghana Government continues to encourage the media and commentators to be circumspect in public commentary on security matters in order not to compromise other related operations. Citizens and travelers are once again assured that Ghana remains safe for visitors.
