A record-setting 24,000 tourists visited the century-old Mysuru zoo on August 14. There were 13,000 visitors on August 15.
For the first time after a hiatus of almost two-and-a-half years, the Mysuru zoo, which went through a grave financial crisis with a radical decline in tourist numbers over lockdown and COVID-19 restrictions, witnessed 24,000 visitors on August 14. This is the highest footfall witnessed after the pandemic. The enthusiastic zoo management stated the reason behind this influx is the continuous holidays.
The zoo, however, has a record of witnessing more than 25,000 visitors during pre-COVID-19 times, predominantly during Dasara celebrations.
The Zoo Executive Director Ajit Kulkarni said that the zoo witnessed almost 11,000 visitors on August 13 and 13,000 on August 14. For three days, the zoo attracted approximately 50,000 tourists. Mr. Kulkarni said that complete renewal of tourism is yet to happen.
The stakeholders said that it might take some more time for the tourist attractions to witness the footfalls of before the pandemic days. However, the recovery is taking place and curbing COVID-19 is the biggest aspect motivating tourism.
The zoo parking lot was fully crammed and the tourists’ cars had to be parked on the Doddakere Maidan in front of the palace with tourists visiting in hordes to the city of palaces during the long weekend.
Other key tourist attractions in Mysuru, especially the palace, also witnessed heavy footfall on all three days.
