IHG Launches New AI-Powered Hotel Search to Transform its Traveller Booking Experiences Worldwide

IHG Hotels & Resorts is revolutionizing the way travellers look for accommodation options by introducing a conversational search through AI on both IHG.com and the IHG One Rewards app. The technology will be introduced to the United States market on 28 July 2026 through a beta version. Travellers will now be able to express their needs regarding travel in natural language, as opposed to traditional searches based on destination and dates.

The technology will be able to understand requirements such as the destination, purpose of visit, amenities required, and individual traveller preferences, and suggest hotels that fit the criteria from IHG’s global network of more than 7,000 hotels.

How Does IHG’s New AI Hotel Search Actually Work?

The biggest change is the way travellers can express their requirements. Instead of selecting a destination and then manually applying several filters, users can provide more detailed descriptions of what they need. A traveller might search for accommodation suitable for a family holiday, a business trip, a city break or a stay where particular amenities are important.

The conversational system then uses that context to generate tailored hotel recommendations. Results can include interactive maps, real-time room availability, current pricing, property information, photographs and amenity details. Travellers can therefore move from a broad travel idea towards a shortlist of potentially suitable properties within the same digital environment. This shifts hotel search from primarily entering fixed information towards describing the intended travel experience.

Can Travellers Search Using Points as Well as Cash?

The technology is being integrated with IHG One Rewards, meaning loyalty members are not limited to viewing conventional cash rates. IHG says travellers will be able to search using points or a combination of points and cash, alongside standard paid rates. This matters because loyalty members often make hotel decisions differently from travellers paying entirely with cash.

A member may have enough points for one destination but achieve better redemption value somewhere else. Others may prefer to preserve part of their points balance and combine rewards with money. Bringing those options into conversational discovery potentially reduces the need to perform several separate searches before identifying an appropriate stay. IHG One Rewards also provides members with different earning, redemption and Milestone Reward opportunities depending on qualifying activity and membership level.

Why Is Verified Hotel Information Important for AI Search?

A major challenge facing AI-assisted travel planning is ensuring recommendations reflect accurate hotel information. IHG says its conversational search results are grounded in verified property data and guest reviews. This information is used to support recommendations covering amenities, photographs and other hotel details. That distinction is important. Travellers using general-purpose AI tools may encounter information drawn from many websites, potentially including outdated descriptions, old photographs or incorrect details.

IHG is attempting to reduce that problem by connecting conversational discovery directly with information inside its own hotel ecosystem. Real-time availability and pricing can also bring travellers closer to an actual booking decision rather than simply providing general inspiration. Guests should nevertheless review final rates, cancellation conditions, room descriptions and booking terms before confirming any reservation.

Is Traditional Hotel Search Being Replaced?

No. IHG is keeping its existing hotel-search functionality available during the beta period. Travellers can therefore choose between the established search process and the new AI conversational option. This is significant because different travellers search in different ways. Someone who already knows the exact hotel, dates and room required may prefer a conventional booking interface.

Another traveller who only knows that they want a relaxing weekend near a beach, a family-friendly property or accommodation with specific facilities may find conversational search more useful. Running both systems together also gives IHG an opportunity to observe how customers interact with AI before extending the technology more widely. The company says the experience will continue to evolve according to user behaviour and feedback during the beta.

Why Is the United States Getting the Technology First?

IHG is taking a phased deployment approach, beginning with users in the US before expanding conversational search into multiple other markets. A staged rollout allows the company to examine how travellers phrase searches, which recommendations are useful and where the system may require improvement. Hotel travel requests can become surprisingly complicated. A traveller may combine location, price, facilities, loyalty preferences and the purpose of a journey within one query.

Testing at scale in one major market gives IHG an opportunity to improve how the system interprets those combinations before wider deployment The company has not provided a complete timetable identifying when every international market will receive the feature. Travellers outside the US should therefore not assume that conversational search is already available within their local IHG website or app.

How Could AI Search Benefit IHG Hotel Owners?

The technology is not designed solely for travellers. IHG believes conversational search could improve property visibility for hotel owners, particularly when travellers are searching for specific experiences rather than well-known hotel names. For example, a property may have characteristics perfectly suited to a traveller but remain difficult to discover through a basic destination-and-price search.

More detailed AI interpretation could potentially match travellers with hotels based on amenities, location characteristics and other distinctive features. IHG is also preparing an AI-optimised hotel content platform that is scheduled to roll out over the coming months. The system will allow hotels to provide richer information, including updated imagery, videos and floor plans, helping properties describe themselves in ways increasingly compatible with AI-led discovery.

Could Richer Hotel Content Change How Properties Compete?

Traditionally, hotel visibility has depended heavily on factors including location, rate, brand recognition, loyalty participation and conventional search filters. Conversational AI could add another factor: how clearly a hotel’s individual characteristics are represented within digital systems. A traveller may not search for a specific hotel name. Instead, they might look for a property with a particular atmosphere, facility or type of experience.

IHG says its forthcoming content platform is intended to help hotels present these characteristics more effectively, both through IHG channels and third-party digital environments. This could make accurate property descriptions increasingly valuable. Hotels that provide detailed amenity information, current photographs and richer digital content may be easier for AI systems to match with highly specific traveller requests.

How Big Is IHG’s Network Behind the AI Search?

The scale of the portfolio makes conversational discovery particularly relevant. IHG reported 7,014 hotels and approximately 1.036 million rooms globally at the end of the first quarter of 2026. The group also had a pipeline of around 2,347 hotels representing 343,000 rooms The company operates 21 hotel brands, covering luxury, lifestyle, premium, essentials and extended-stay segments.

Its portfolio includes brands such as Six Senses, Regent, InterContinental, Kimpton, Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza, voco, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Garner, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites. For travellers, searching such a large portfolio manually can require substantial filtering. Conversational technology attempts to narrow those choices based on what the traveller actually describes rather than expecting users to understand every brand beforehand.

Is This Part of a Bigger IHG Artificial Intelligence Strategy?

The July beta is part of a broader digital programme rather than an isolated experiment. IHG had already announced in June 2026 that it was advancing conversational AI capabilities and preparing to integrate natural-language hotel discovery into its own website and mobile app. The company has invested in consolidating its data within cloud infrastructure and developing technology platforms capable of supporting AI at greater scale.

IHG says additional capabilities are still planned. Future development areas include greater personalisation and agentic booking capabilities, which could move AI beyond simply recommending hotels towards assisting with more stages of the reservation process. Those features remain future developments and should not be confused with functionality already available in the current beta.

What Could Conversational Search Mean for Travellers?

The immediate benefit is simplification. Hotel searches often require travellers to translate personal requirements into a series of checkboxes and filters. Conversational search reverses that process by allowing people to explain what they want more naturally. Combining those requests with live availability, pricing, maps, verified hotel information and IHG One Rewards redemption options could shorten the path between travel inspiration and reservation.

However, AI recommendations should still function as a discovery tool rather than replacing normal booking checks. Travellers should confirm room conditions, taxes, cancellation terms, accessibility requirements and final pricing before payment. The technology becomes most useful when it makes suitable hotels easier to discover while leaving the final booking decision with the traveller.

IHG’s AI Launch Signals a Bigger Shift in Hotel Discovery

Conversational Search Beta by IHG USA signifies a drastic shift in the way a leading hotelier of the world seeks to engage customers in their search for accommodation. Rather than forcing travellers to sift through thousands of accommodations using limited filters, IHG has opened up its platform where the customers can describe their holiday experience in their own terms and get recommendations based on authentic property information, customer reviews, and commercial data.

This new technology will have great implications on the hotel owners too. More property information could increase the odds of being discovered when travellers are searching for very specialized holiday experiences or facilities. This launch is still only a beta starting from the US, with traditional searches being available for the time being and future global expansion still underway. In case it succeeds, then the major shift that will take place will be from the hotels asking travellers for the type of hotel they require to the hotels asking travellers what kind of experience they are trying to create.
